The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Crop Sector Development Branch, as a Provincial Organic and Vegetable Specialist, in Fredericton.
 
As a member of the Crop Sector Development Branch and reporting to the Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following: developing, implementing and evaluating strategies, programs and initiatives to strengthen and build the Province’s greenhouse and field grown vegetable and organic industries; providing technical advice and leadership in the development of these sectors in the Province and working with industry stakeholders and departmental staff to improve competitiveness; working to address constraints to development; working to promote sustainable growth of these sectors; advising the Department, Provincial Government and other agencies on policy and issues related to the vegetable and organic sectors, as required; keeping up-to-date on research and the adoption of emerging technologies affecting production; conducting research; understanding regulatory frameworks that relate to the organic industry; understanding certification programs related to food safety in organic and vegetable production; working in cooperation with regional staff and industry; representing the Province, as required, at the inter-provincial and national level on issues relating to the sectors; and performing other related duties as assigned. The successful candidate will be responsible for both greenhouse and field grown vegetable production as well as for the organic crop and livestock sectors throughout the province. 
 
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:
A Master’s degree in Science with specialization in agriculture or a related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience in agricultural development; OR 
A Bachelor’s degree in Science with specialization in agriculture or a related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience in agricultural development. 
 
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. 
 
The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.
 
Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability on your application.

Written communication, including policies, analytical reports, proposals, and briefing materials.

Planning and organizing skills
 
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to travel throughout the Province and participate in regional meetings, as required. Possession of a Class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent, is required.
 
SALARY:  $60,320 to $82,550 per annum
 
NOTE:  In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.
