Salary $64,086.02 - $80,042.76 annually

One full time, permanent position is currently available and can be performed from Victoria or Abbotsford.

The Sector Development Branch identifies and promotes agriculture and food production/processing systems that are sustainable and enhance the economic benefits to the province. The Branch leads the Ministry’s agriculture business and industry development including initiatives with First Nations, new entrants, organics and food processing. It maintains operations in all agriculture regions of the province to deliver Ministry programs and services through a network of regional agrologists and industry specialists.

On October 17, 2018 the federal Cannabis Act came into force and provinces and territories have responded in kind, with regulations now in force on a province by province basis. The ministry is allocating $1.03M in new resources to support the implementation of cannabis legalization in the agriculture sector, and ensure the ministry meets the provincial goals of protecting health and safety and environmental sustainability, while supporting economic development. The Industry Specialist, Emerging Markets role will be positioned to take on the Cannabis file, by providing technical advice and cannabis expertise to cannabis cultivators and processors to support economic development and implementation of sustainable practices. The Industry Specialist will provide sector development program support to the economic development of this emerging industry, including guidance and tools for small and medium sized licensed operators. The Industry Specialist is expected to work closely with industry personnel and their representative bodies, with other Ministry branches, other government departments, and all levels of regional and local government, including First Nations.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Degree in the natural resource field or equivalent as recognized by the relevant association, and a minimum of five years of related experience*.
  • Registered as a Professional Agrologist, or immediately eligible* for registration as a Professional Agrologist, with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists.

Related experience must include all of the following:

  • Experience working in agriculture and/or food industries.
  • Experience negotiating/mediating solutions.
  • Experience working with industry groups.
