Guest Speaker: Dr. Tina Widowski - Professor at Deptartment of Animal and Poultry Science and Egg Farmers of Canada; Research Chair in Poultry Welfare, University of Guelph
Discussion Topic: Animal welfare in production agriculture
Dr. Widowski uses her training and experience in animal physiology and behaviour to try to understand how animals respond to how they are treated. With the ethical concern of farm animals at an all time high consumers are shaping the way that livestock are reared and their products treated. Often, animal welfare is a contentious issue with emotional undertones. Systems formerly developed for optimal production and animal health are now being questioned and re-evaluated. Dr. Widowski’s work provides essential information to multi-stakeholders and help to develop science based codes and standards.
