Job Type: Contract Position 37.5 hours weekly

The Ontario Institute of Agrologists (OIA) is looking for a General Manager for its Ontario based operation. OIA is a not-for-profit certification organization and professional society for Agrologists that share an interest in developing, applying, continuously improving and obtaining professional certification in Agrology.


Purpose of General Manager Position: 

  • The position will operate from a home office, and will be a contract position 
  • The role of General Manager (GM) will have overall management of the day to day operations of all aspects of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists
  • The position will report directly to the Board of Directors 

The GM is responsible for leading both the revenue and cost elements of the Institute as well as forward planning. The GM will be responsible for leading and coordinating the strategic planning activities of the Institute and to explore new opportunities to provide excellent service to our members, offering and maintaining certification standards, courses and exams, and planning and coordinating conferences.


Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Implement the strategic goals and objectives of the Institute 
  • Manage the day to day operational activities of the organization 
  • Support and enable the Board of Directors to fulfil its governance function within the requirements of a not-for-profit entity
  • Give direction and leadership toward the achievement of the Institute’s philosophy, mission, strategy, and its annual goals and objectives in membership growth and retention
  • Be accountable for financial management, recommend yearly budget for Board approval, and prudently manage the organization’s resources within those budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations 


The Person Will: 

  • Have proven experience in, and knowledge of, the not-for-profit environment 
  • Be punctual and reliable with a willingness to work after hours 
  • Have excellent literacy, numeracy and information technology skills as required by the position 
  • Be self-motivated and have excellent communication skills 
  • Have excellent personal presentation
  • Actively support and encourage growth of the organization



  • Proficiency and/or working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, Lync, Access) QuickBooks, website management 
  • An understanding of the “practice of agrology” in Ontario
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) 
  • Experience and skills with strategic planning 
  • Be familiar with contracts and legal wording used in contracts 
  • Project management and project delivery experience 
  • An independent thinker able to work alone effectively 


Selection Criteria: 

  • Proven experience to manage all of the financial, data and planning needs of an organization
  • Be able to complete all work using computer, web, phone, and email 
  • The work will be performed by an independent contractor. No physical office space or equipment is provided 
  • This is an annual contract that may be renewed each year depending on funding, work to be done and performance 
  • The successful applicant will have a degree and at least three years’ experience in managing a member-based or relevant organization
